Project Safe Space

Promoting Digital Safety and Responsibility

The ISACA Student Group (USJ ISG) of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura successfully launched Project Safe Space, a cybersecurity awareness initiative aimed at empowering students to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly. The project focuses on practical education, real-life examples, and fostering digital confidence among both school and university students.

Phase 1: Empowering School Students

Phase 1 of Project Safe Space took place on 17th October 2025 at St. Paul’s Milagiriya School, with over 30 students participating. The session focused on teaching students how to protect themselves in the digital world, highlighting strategies for smart, safe, and confident online behavior.

A special thank you to Mr. Sithira Wanniarachchi, Head of Cyber Security Governance & Compliance at Dialog Axiata PLC, for sharing his invaluable knowledge and inspiring students with practical insights into cybersecurity. Through engaging discussions and real-life examples, students were able to better understand online risks and how to respond to them responsibly.

Phase 2: Cybersecurity Awareness for Undergraduates

Phase 2 was conducted virtually on 8th January 2026, in collaboration with Project Shield, targeting undergraduate students of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. This session emphasized digital responsibility and ethical online conduct, preparing students to manage their online presence safely while adhering to best practices in cybersecurity.

We extend heartfelt thanks to Mr. Charuka Damunupola, Lead Information Security Engineer at Sri Lanka CERT, for facilitating the session and educating students on smart, safe, and confident digital behavior.

To make the sessions more interactive and engaging, Slava Scented Candles partnered up as the gift partner, and a lucky winner from the participant list received a special prize. This initiative not only rewarded participation but also encouraged active learning and engagement throughout the sessions.

Project Safe Space successfully created a platform for students to learn practical cybersecurity skills, understand the consequences of online behavior, and gain confidence in navigating digital spaces. By combining expert insights, interactive learning, and real-life examples, ISG USJ continues to foster a culture of digital responsibility and safety.
