Bridging Theory and Practice

The ISACA Student Group (USJ ISG) successfully hosted the Cybersecurity in Action session on 2nd January 2026 at the Language Lab (E408), Faculty of Management Studies & Commerce. The session aimed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world cybersecurity practices, giving students a unique opportunity to learn from industry experience.
The session was facilitated by Mr. Namodh Edirisinghe, CISSP, OSCP, whose extensive expertise in cybersecurity brought both depth and practical insights to the discussion. He emphasized not only the technical aspects of cybersecurity but also the critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills necessary to tackle real-world challenges.
The session covered several essential aspects of cybersecurity, including:
- The current global cybersecurity landscape – Understanding emerging threats and trends.
- Major cyber attacks in the industry – Real-life examples and case studies highlighted lessons learned from notable incidents.
- Attackers’ objectives – Insights into what attackers aim to achieve after gaining access to systems.
- Common tools and techniques – Practical overview of methods used by attackers.
- Certifications and career pathways – Guidance on professional development in cybersecurity and related fields.
The session encouraged active participation, with students asking questions, exploring real-world scenarios, and discussing industry best practices. This interactive format helped attendees understand the practical applications of cybersecurity concepts and inspired them to think critically about potential challenges in the field.
A special thank you goes to Mr. Namodh Edirisinghe for sharing his knowledge and insights, making the session both engaging and educational. The ISG also extends gratitude to all participants for their enthusiasm, which made the event a great success.
